This was one of the books that I've been putting off reading, and boy was I wrong to do that. The Cows, published by HarperCollins, is praised as a fresh, funny, feminist book - a new voice that is setting the agenda for a new generation of readers.
SHORT SYNOPSIS:
Three women. A whole world of judgement.
Tara, Cam and Stella are very different women. Yet in a society that sets the agenda, there's something about being a woman that ties invisible bonds between us.
When one extraordinary event rockets Tara to online infamy, their three worlds collide in ways they could never imagine - and they discover that one woman's catastrophe might just be another's inspiration.
Through friendship and conflict, difference and likeness, they'll learn to find their own voices.
Because sometimes it's OK not to follow the herd.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Dawn O'Porter (born Dawn Porter; born 23 January 1979) is a British writer, director and television presenter. She was born in Alexandria, Scotland, but raised in Guernsey. She made numerous documentaries about all sorts of things: polygamy, childbirth, Geisha, body image, breast cancer and even the movie Dirty Dancing. She is the critically acclaimed author of Paper Aeroplanes and Goose.
MY REVIEW:
I received this book as a present less than a year ago from a friend. They say don't judge the book by its cover which is exactly what I did - I initially very much disliked it because of its cover. I didn't find it tempting at all, and the blurb did not do it any favours either!
But, as you can guess, I was very wrong. The Cows has a nice feminist tone throughout and is a great read if you want to tune out for a while and escape the reality. It even made me laugh at times! The three main characters are all women who decide not to follow 'the herd' and make their own life choices. None of the characters in the book are a stereotype of a perfect woman, which is why I found it so easy to sympathise and identify with them.
Read it or avoid it?
I will definitely be reading more of O'Porter in the future.
